Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) has officially launched the Jobs and Skills Atlas, the first public labour market data tool of its kind.
Users can find labour market data on individual regions across Australia and compare it directly to state and national data.
A year of beta testing and feedback from stakeholders and the public has guided the addition of new features and information.
“This will be a data source for everyone – students to statisticians, careers advisers, local councils, small business owners. Anyone who wants to understand more about their local economy through to what’s happening at a national level,” said JSA Commissioner, Professor Barney Glover.
“Atlas is a great step towards making integrated data much more available to a wide audience. What I particularly like is how it brings data together in a way that’s user-friendly, like its map search function. It’s providing economic data in a format that’s easy to access and use.”
“We’ve had so much interest already – including from overseas partners looking to create their own version – that we think Atlas will shake out many more and newer perspectives, better data and insights delivering new thinking about our labour market.”
Offering a user-friendly format that combines a variety of key JSA labour market datasets in one place, Atlas provides a comprehensive overview of labour market data at national, state and regional levels.
For example, Atlas can be used to compare two regional areas side by side to see what key economic differences. It can also be used to investigate industry data at the divisional level (ANZSIC1) and sub-divisional level (ANZSIC2).
Atlas allows users to discover employment projections for the future and the top regions by industries for each region.
Occupations data can be investigated, such as employment and vacancy data over time, age and female share.
Atlas is a useful tool in identifying challenges such as industry competition for the same employment pool and assessing future demand and shortage ratings for occupations. It also shows changes in business activity over a given year.
Atlas will continue to stay relevant, with new features and data being added on a regular basis.
