VET Qualification Similarity Analysis

More than 1300 VET training package qualifications have been analysed using natural language processing techniques to identify similarities between them.

The outputs of the model are available in a new searchable dashboard, the Exploratory Analysis of VET Qualification Similarity. The analysis covers qualifications from all 56 training packages from the National Register of VET from December 2020.

The similarity is drawn from five different sources - the qualification title and description, key words, core and elective unit titles - with overall similarity ranked from very high to low. The dashboard also shows the core and elective units taught across different qualifications.

This work has the potential to identify similar training products, simplify the VET system and qualification design, and help Australians better understand and adapt to a changing labour market.

We will continue to build on this exploratory analysis and welcome all feedback on model improvements and use cases via skillsintelligence@jobsandskills.gov.au.
