First Nations People Workforce Analysis report

The First Nations Workforce Analysis is the first report of its kind to use linked data sets from the Australian Taxation Office, the Department of Social Services, and the tertiary education sector, to provide a more timely and informative view of the workforce, including employment of First Nations’ people, as well as post-school education and training outcomes. Such data would usually only be available every five years in the Census.  Analysis based on administrative data has its limitations, including size and complexity, and the inability to measure important skills like cultural knowledge and resilience. When interpreting results, it is important to note many First Nations people face individual and systemic barriers which affect their education and employment outcomes which may be invisible in available data.   We hope the insights in this report will spark collaborative conversations between First Nations communities, service providers, industry and government.  Take a look at the key findings summary on the First Nations People Workforce Analysis page.

Labour Market Update - May 2023

The Labour Market Updates are quarterly reports that provide information about issues affecting Australia’s current and emerging labour market. This update brings together a range of Jobs and Skills Australia, and Australian Bureau of Statistics data sources to analyse the state of the Australian labour market in the March quarter of 2023. This update highlights: the recent overall strength of the Australian labour market variations in outcomes across industries, occupations and skill levels – including strong recent employment outcomes for occupations where VET qualifications are the primary pathway a slight easing in recruitment difficulty and an increase in the likelihood of employers filling an advertised role improved recent results across a number of indicators of wages growth an expansion of preliminary analysis of the underlying drivers of skills shortage for the top 20 occupations in demand, to assess whether the shortage is primarily driven by: a lack of people with the essential technical skills or by other factors – such as non-technical qualities considered important by employers or by willingness to apply for the vacancies under current conditions a deep dive into key regional skills needs.

Skills Shortage Quarterly – March 2023

The Skills Shortage Quarterly presents quarterly analysis on occupation shortage pressures. Data underpinning the analysis is drawn from the Survey of Employers who Recently Advertised. Key findings in the March 2023 report include: recent rising fill rates point to a potential labour market softening fill rates have been consistently low in some occupations including for Health Professionals, Construction Trades Workers and Sports and Personal Service Workers there is a persistent gap between the average number of qualified and suitable applicants which can be viewed as an indicator that formal qualifications alone are not sufficient to meet employer needs.

Australia’s labour market conditions are robust with strong increases in full time employment, and improvements for both the long-term unemployed and underemployed. However, the strong pace of employment growth will be difficult to sustain and the Australian labour market is not immune to the international forces driving higher inflation and slower global growth.

The Australian Labour Market for Migrants publication provides information on the Australian labour market. Vocational education and training in regional, rural and remote Australia

The report, Vocational education and training in regional, rural and remote Australia, examines the availability and accessibility of vocational education and training (VET) for students outside of Australia’s capital cities. These initial findings will help inform future research and analysis in this area. Key findings include:  training is driven to a large extent by local industries with higher enrolments in agricultural and engineering-related training when compared with major cities training in essential services, such as health and education, has an equal weighting across major cities and regions VET students in regional Australia are more likely to be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students or from a lower socioeconomic background than their counterparts from major cities student satisfaction is consistently high across regions and over time.
