New vacancy data uncovers hidden labour demand

Australia recorded 1,310,400 new job vacancies in the November 2025 quarter – around 26,500 fewer positions than a year prior.

Online ads don’t capture the full story, especially in trade occupations where many employers continue to hire through word of mouth, social media, agencies or shopfront signs. The gap between what’s advertised online and the real number of vacancies is substantial, particularly in Technicians and Trades. In the November 2025 quarter, the IVI recorded 26,900 online ads for Automotive and Engineering Trades Workers, while TNV estimated 40,100 actual vacancies – showing many jobs were never advertised online.

JSA’s Total New Vacancies (TNV) series provides a fuller view by combining online ads from the Internet Vacancy Index with employer insights from the Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey. This approach fills in the gaps that online vacancy ads don’t capture, strengthening place‑based workforce planning and giving policymakers, industry and communities a clearer view of labour demand across Australia’s diverse economy.
