The latest Labour Force Trending (LFT) data has been released, offering fresh insights into how Australia's employment landscape is evolving.
The new May 2025 data paints a clear picture of employment changes across industries and occupations – tracking trends over the past year, five years and even decade. It complements other key sources like the Internet Vacancy Index and Employment Projections helping businesses, policymakers and researchers understand where the jobs are and where they’re heading.
Some standout trends from this release include:
- Health Care and Social Assistance continues to power ahead, with employment growing by 5.1%, adding 115,200 jobs.
- Technicians and Trades Workers remain a cornerstone of the workforce, with nearly 2 million Australians (14% of all workers) in these roles.
- Almost half of new jobs created over the past year were in occupations that typically require a VET qualification or similar experience, highlighting the growing value of practical, skills-based education.
The LFT dataset is available at both national and state/territory levels, with a supporting methodology paper explaining how the trends are calculated. It’s a valuable tool for anyone involved in workforce planning or labour market analysis.
Whether you’re shaping policy, hiring staff, or researching industry change, May’s LFT data offers a clearer view of the jobs landscape in Australia today.
