Global labour markets soften as growth slows

Jobs and Skills Australia’s International Labour Market Update provides the latest insights into changing labour market conditions across advanced economies.

The August update shows signs of softening, including rising unemployment, slower employment growth and easing labour shortages. Global economic growth is also expected to slow in 2026, including across emerging and developing economies, while growth in labour force participation across OECD countries is projected to ease.

Together, these trends point to a changing international labour market. While labour market conditions remained resilient in 2026 for OECD countries, employment opportunities are becoming more uneven across countries, industries and occupations.

The update also compares labour productivity and productivity growth across selected countries and provides labour market indicators for the Euro Area, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.
