Australia’s job market recorded a 1.2% increase in online job ads last month (seasonally adjusted). Advertisements increased across most major occupation groups, with Professionals, and Technicians and Trades Workers seeing the strongest increase. The Northern Territory experienced the strongest increase in job ads.
Job ad numbers increased compared with the same time last year. While capital cities continued to record declines, regional Australia saw a modest increase over the year.
Supporting communities, sustaining workforces: Labour demand for Welfare Support Workers
Welfare Support Workers help people and communities manage social, emotional and financial challenges by providing advice, support and connections to services. Demand for these workers remains strong due to changing population needs and a focus on helping people take part in work and community life. This high need is especially strong outside major cities, creating ongoing pressure to keep these essential services available where they are most needed.
Although the number of Welfare Support Workers has grown steadily across Australia, some regions face greater difficulty filling roles, leading to tighter labour markets and service strain. These challenges are made worse by the demanding nature of the work, which often involves high emotional loads, heavy workloads and exposure to clients experiencing trauma. In response, investment in training pathways, place-based workforce initiatives and support for local workers aim to build a stronger, more resilient workforce.
