According to the latest Occupation and Industry data, Sales Assistants remains Australia’s largest employing occupation, with over 556,000 workers – most of whom are young (median age 23) and working part-time (75%).

Aged and Disabled Carers has become the second largest employing occupation, growing by 28,500 workers over the year to reach 364,700, reflecting rising demand in the care sector. Registered Nurses follows closely, employing over 360,000 people, with an annual increase of 13,500.

Health Care and Social Assistance is the largest industry, employing nearly 2.4 million people – a 137.6% increase over the past 20 years. Professional, Scientific and Technical Services ranks second, with 1.4 million workers, and grew by over 63,000 jobs in the past year. Education and Training also continues to grow, employing 1.3 million, with School Education accounting for 646,400 jobs.

These figures highlight the growing importance of health, education, and professional services in shaping Australia’s workforce.
