The quarterly Occupation Shortage Report is now the Employer Activity Insights interactive table, giving users greater flexibility to explore and analyse data from the Survey of Employers who have Recently Advertised.
The new format allows users to play with the data and uncover patterns in recruitment conditions across skill levels, broad occupation groups and regions. It also introduces a new metric, Duration of vacancies, providing additional insight into how long vacancies remain open and the conditions employers are facing when recruiting.
Nationally, the fill rate increased slightly by 0.5 percentage points to 69.1% in the June quarter 2026. However, it remained 1.0 percentage point lower than a year earlier. Since the June quarter 2025, the national fill rate has remained relatively stable, ranging between 68% and 70%.
There were also increases in the number of total, qualified and suitable applicants per vacancy in the current quarter, with all three measures higher than they were 12 months ago. At the same time, the average time taken to fill vacancies reduced marginally over both the quarter and the year.
Results across metropolitan and regional areas broadly mirrored the national picture, although there were some differences. Metropolitan fill rates were lower in the June quarter and compared with 12 months earlier, while regional fill rates were higher over both periods.
