Building skills and capability for Australia’s future workforce

Jobs and Skills Australia has released the 2026 Jobs and Skills report - Pathways to Success. This year’s release coincides with the inaugural Jobs & Skills Month, themed Pathways to Success, which recognises how career pathways are evolving. The report explores how Australia can build, use and strengthen the capabilities of its workforce throughout working life.

But as the labour market continues to change, the report highlights that meeting workforce needs will require more than increasing the supply of skilled people.

The proportion of occupations experiencing skills shortages has declined from a peak of 36% in 2023 to 29% in 2025. However, long-standing shortages remain, including in areas of national priority.

The report also explores how solutions need to consider both skills supply and the way workforce demand is expressed through jobs. This includes strengthening education, training and apprenticeship pathways, supporting workplace learning, improving job design and attractiveness, and reducing barriers to participation and skills recognition.
