Cyber security skills in demand as labour market evolves

In October’s Australian Labour Market for Migrants report, the Hot Topic focuses on Cyber Security Professionals, a workforce experiencing sustained demand.

As of August 2025, around 70,900 people were employed as Database and Systems Administrators and ICT Security Specialists, up by 3,300 over the year. Employment in this group is projected to grow 14.2% from May 2024 to 2029, more than double the national average rate of 6.6%.

The main employing industries include Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, Public Administration and Safety, and Financial and Insurance Services.

The report also shows that Australia’s labour market continues to perform well but shows signs of softening, with trend employment falling over the year to August 2025 in Manufacturing, Wholesale Trade and Mining.

The national trend unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.3% in August 2025, up from 4.1% a year earlier. Unemployment decreased in Tasmania (4.1% to 3.7%) and Victoria (4.5% to 4.4%), but increased across most other states and territories, including South Australia (4.1% to 4.6%) and the ACT (3.3% to 3.9%).

Employment growth varied across occupations, with the largest gains for:

  • Professionals (+177,400)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+64,500)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+34,000).

Declines were recorded for:

  • Labourers (-26,300)
  • Machinery Operators and Drivers (-18,000)
  • Clerical and Administrative Workers (-16,500).
