Jobs and Skills Australia’s latest Internet Vacancy Index results show the number of online job ads held steady across Australia’s job market last month (seasonally adjusted). Advertisements decreased across 4 major occupation groups, with Technicians and Trades Workers, and Sales Workers seeing the strongest decreases. The Northern Territory and Victoria experienced the strongest decreases in job ads.
Job ad numbers increased compared with the same time last year. While job ad numbers in capital cities held steady, regional Australia saw an increase over the year.
Drawing on the future: strong demand for Mechanical Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians
Mechanical Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians face persistent shortages despite modest employment growth, with recruitment demand rising particularly strongly in Regional Australia. This suggests shortages are being driven less by a lack of qualified candidates and more by difficulties finding workers with the skills, experience and work-readiness employers require.
These pressures are compounded by an ageing, predominantly male workforce and limited flexible employment. Strengthening training and workforce pathways, broadening participation, and supporting workers transitioning from traditional energy industries could help address shortages while building the skilled workforce needed for Australia’s energy transition.
