Australia’s job market recorded a 3.3% decrease in online job ads last month (seasonally adjusted). Advertisements decreased across all major occupation groups, with Sales Workers and Machinery Operators and Drivers seeing the strongest decrease. The Northern Territory experienced the strongest decrease in job ads.
Job ad numbers decreased compared with the same time last year. While capital cities continued to record declines, regional Australia saw an increase over the year.
Grounded Potential: Insights into demand for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers
There is a growing mismatch between demand and supply for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) in Australia. As aviation activity rebounds post COVID-19, job advertisements have surged, remaining well above pre-pandemic levels, yet employment has declined by over 12% in the past five years. This divergence points to structural issues.
Challenges include a gendered workforce (with women representing only 6%), stable apprenticeship completions, defence driven demand, and the need for a new generation of engineers to service an expanding and technologically advanced fleet.
Despite recent softening in the labour market, demand remains historically high, reinforcing the critical role AMEs play in maintaining aviation safety and supporting national transport infrastructure.
